Chapter Seven

“What the—where the hell did he go?” Archie exclaimed, looking around.

“Stop the car, Gus,” Vicus ordered. “The demon must have sensed a threat.”

“Well, go get him!” Archie fumbled with his own seat belt, trying to get it undone.

Gus, one of the vampire guards who were well trusted by Misha and who Archie was used to hanging around, slammed on the brakes just as Archie got the seat belt undone.

“Ow! Geez, watch it, Gus, I think I chipped my tooth.” Archie gingerly touched his front tooth that had slammed into the seat in front of him.

“Take Archie directly to the Durand coven—”

“Nope!” Archie quickly scrambled out of the back of the car. Vicus also climbed out, golden eyes hard. “I’m not leaving my mate out here alone.”

“Shachar will not be alone as I will be with him. Now get back in the car, Archie.”

“Nope.” Archie crossed his arms and raised his chin to look Vicus in the eye. He grimaced and decided another tact would be better when Vicus grabbed him by the arm and, opening the door, jerked Archie into the car. “Okay, okay! Geez. I just don’t want my mate hurt.”

“Take Archie to the coven, Gus.” Vicus sighed heavily. “Trust in your mate, Archie. He has had to fight his entire life. Show respect for this, and his need to keep you and Linc safe.”

Archie scowled. “Fine. But I’ll be talking to your mates and seeing what they have to say about you always taking off and going into dangerous places.”

“Put aside four hours and thirteen minutes for that discussion, and be prepared for PowerPoint presentations and reading a two-hundred-page document.” Vicus shut the door.

Archie blinked. “Huh?”

Gus chuckled as he put the car back into gear and took off. “Apparently Avenger Vicus’ mate Deakin set up a family night a few days ago with a presentation and booklet, all about how he should be able to keep track of Vicus every minute of the day.”

That would not have been a good night for anyone. Archie could just picture Deakin Myers, part sprite, totally OCD, putting together a very detailed, very long-winded session, and decided he should just talk to Shachar and find out exactly what he sensed and maybe suggest they figure out, together, how to handle those sort of situations in future.

They arrived at the Durand coven five minutes later, and there Archie was given a good telling off by Misha. Feeling bad for having put so many to so much trouble, and for worrying Misha, Archie groveled a little and took the reprimand like a good boy. He called Linc—he’d gotten his mate’s cell number months ago from Dominic—but Linc didn’t answer, so he called Chane who said Linc was in with Drake and promised to have Linc call after.

Archie ended up pacing Tyler’s office until Shachar strode in, thankfully uninjured. Archie had to hold himself back from rushing over and checking the man up close and personal. While pacing he’d decided not to go the
